    The University of Coimbra is the oldest university in the country and one of the oldest in the world. UNESCO has recognized relevant criteria that justify the inscription of the University, Alta and Sofia in the World Heritage List. In addition to the university, Sé Velha, whose construction project began in 1139 and is one of the most important Romanesque-style buildings in Portugal, the Botanical Garden, created in the eighteenth century in the center of the city, and the majestic Monastery of Santa Clara are mandatory stops.
